Hiringa's inquiry learning...

This term the Year 5 and 6s in Whanau Hiringa are learning about rubbish.  Our question is "Are we throwing away our future?"  We have researching things like pollution, rubbish and more.  Here are of the things they have though about...

  • gyres
  • rubbish islands
  • recycling
and much more!

Each child in Hiringa is involved in a project that is either independent or in a group to help or experiment for the survival of the beautiful earth we live on now.

Wonderful wonderful worms!

Some Eco Warriors interviewed Lyndsey, our fabulous worm caregiver about Balmoral's worm farms....

Lights out!

We noticed that classes were leaving their lights on when they were out of the room.  We decided to make some signs to remind them to turn off the lights when they leave.  We will save power.

Clearing out the Intermediate vegetable garden

We realized that the Intermediate's vegetable garden  was very overgrown with weeds.  We spent lunchtime doing a big tidy up.

Year 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 children working together.

Rainbow chard and broad beans are growing in the garden.

Make sure you're pulling out the weeds, and looking after the vegetables!

Great job! Lots of weeds for the compost bin!

Fair Trade hot chocolate morning

On May 21st, as part of Fair Trade Fortnight, we held a hot chocolate morning.  The Eco Warriors sold lots of yummy hot chocolates to kids and parents.  We managed to raise $243.40, which goes to Oxfam to support their work with Fair Trade farmers around the world.

Proud Eco Warriors with our Certificate of thanks from Oxfam.

Rainbow warriors!

On Thursday we had the very first meeting of the new Eco Warriors group for the Year 0 to 3 children.  We are called the RAINBOW WARRIORS and we are going to meet every Thursday.

For our first meeting we walked around the school gardens.  We looked carefully and thought about how we could look after our school environment.  Then we worked in groups to brainstorm some fantastic ideas...

  • tidying up rubbish
  • looking after insects and other creatures
  • making good bugs come to our school gardens
  • plant more flowers
  • watering the garden
  • making beautiful stuff
  • looking after plants
  • look after the creatures' habitats
  • make signs to tell people how to look after the gardens
  • plant more vegetables
  • grow pumpkins and strawberries
  • grow other food plants - blueberries, watermelons, bananas etc
  • look after the monarch caterpillars
Next time we will look at all these exciting ideas and make a plan about what to do first.
